In my years of experience in helping people to choose and set up archery equipment, I have noticed that the most overlooked item on the bow is the BOWSTRING . Odd because the bow string is the most important item on the bow and a defective string can make a big difference and really let you down.
When shooting recurve I notice that the flatter and more consistent I could make both end loops then the quieter my bow would become and the tighter my groups of arrows would be on the target. The more subtle little tricks I learned how to make the string better, then the better I would shoot and the more consistent I would be. When I last shot R/C regularly our club –SKB - won the British Archer postal league Portsmouth round First Division for 2 years running, and every time out I shot between 587 and 592 out of 600.
In all that time I was helping friends and clients to set up their compound bows and it was always apparent that sub standard stings would cause problems with peep alignment, serving separation, stretch, cam timing and erratic tuning. I knew I could do a better job of building the strings and cables and in helping others I was soon excited to try shooting compound myself. Sure enough I enjoyed it immediately and discovered as with recurve the subtle ways I learned of making the strings better and better, the more I could reduce the aforementioned problems and tighten up my arrow groups on the target. I have got more consistent as have my club mates at SKB and now we find ourselves in Division One of the BA Portsmouth and Frost bite Compound postal league so it feels like we have come full circle.
